Moraes summons Eduardo Paes for hearing in Rio about mega-operation

Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) summoned Rio de Janeiro’s mayor, Eduardo Paes (PSD), on Friday (31) to participate in one of a series of hearings scheduled for next Monday (3) in the capital of Rio de Janeiro. The meetings will address the large police operation carried out in the Alemão and Penha complexes in Rio on Tuesday (28), which resulted in 121 deaths, according to the local Civil Police. The hearing with Eduardo Paes will take place at 6 p.m., and Moraes is expected to personally conduct the hearings in Rio de Janeiro. According to a supplementary decision published on Friday, the meeting was arranged ‘in advance.’ Before meeting with Paes, Moraes has a scheduled meeting with the Governor of Rio, Cláudio Castro (PL), at 11 a.m. As reported by CNN Brazil, the meeting is likely to take place at the CICC (Integrated Command and Control Center). The Secretary of Public Security of the state, the State Police Commander, the Chief of Civil Police, and the Director of the General Superintendence of Forensic Police are also expected to attend the meeting. Moraes has also ordered hearings with the President of the Rio de Janeiro State Court, the Attorney General of Justice, and the General Public Defender of the state. The hearings were mandated within the scope of the Favelas ADPF (Writ of Noncompliance with a Fundamental Precept No. 635). Moraes is the interim rapporteur of the case, while the position of the former rapporteur, Luís Roberto Barroso, awaits the new minister’s swearing-in.
