More than 1,600 dead in floods in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand

The total number of deaths has risen to 276 in Thailand, where authorities estimate that four million people have been affected by the bad weather, with numerous streets remaining flooded in seven southern provinces. While the government does not disclose the total number of missing persons, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) indicated on Thursday that 367 people were reported missing in the country. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the hardest-hit country by the convergence of cyclones in Southeast and South Asia, the death toll has risen to 862 today, with 571 missing, nearly 2,700 injured, and around 3.5 million affected individuals. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) stated in its latest report that 3.3 million people were affected by Cyclone Senyar, which brought heavy rains, landslides, and floods. Aceh province has the highest number of deaths, followed by North Sumatra and West Sumatra. At least 1.1 million people have been evacuated from their homes, and nearly 10,000 houses have been damaged. Search and rescue operations continue in the affected areas, involving the Army, as well as volunteers and emergency teams, who report significant challenges in carrying out their work.
