Mount Semeru Eruption in Indonesia: Villages Blanketed with Ash, Evacuations Underway

Indonesia’s Mount Semeru, the highest peak on Java island, erupted on Wednesday, sending searing clouds of hot ash and rock cascading down its slopes. The volcano, located in East Java province, unleashed a mixture of rock, lava, and gas, traveling distances of up to 7 kilometers. The Geology Agency reported that the eruption prompted authorities to raise the alert level to the highest point. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported yet.

Around 300 residents from the most at-risk villages in Lumajang district were evacuated to government shelters as a preventative measure. The volcano’s heightened activity led to the expansion of the danger zone to 8 kilometers from the crater. People were advised to steer clear of the Besuk Kobokan River, the route of the lava flow. Videos circulating on social media captured the dense cloud of ash descending into a valley, compelling residents to seek refuge in temporary shelters or safer areas.

Reports indicate that approximately 178 individuals, including climbers, porters, and guides, are stranded at the 3,676-meter Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post. Fortunately, they remain safe at the post, located 4.5 kilometers from the volcanic crater. Endrip Wahyutama mentioned in a video statement that the group had to stay overnight due to bad weather conditions. Mount Semeru, also known as Mahameru, has a history of eruptions over the past two centuries. Despite the dangers posed by its volcanic activity, many people continue to reside on its fertile slopes.

The previous major eruption of Semeru occurred in December 2021, claiming 51 lives and causing injuries to hundreds in villages buried under mud layers. Over 10,000 people were evacuated during that eruption, with nearly 3,000 houses relocated from high-risk areas. Indonesian authorities face the challenge of managing volcanic hazards in a country with 129 active volcanoes. Positioned on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, posing significant risks to its population.
