The Japanese city of Nagasaki paid tribute to the victims of the August 9, 1945 atomic bombing on Saturday, reiterating its call for peace and the abolition of nuclear weapons. Despite the rain, many residents gathered on Saturday, August 9, 2025 at the Peace Park in Nagasaki, Japan, to commemorate the atomic bombing that struck the city 80 years ago. At 11:02, the exact time of the explosion, bells rang for a minute of silence in memory of the victims. Nagasaki was the second city in the Japanese archipelago targeted by an American atomic bomb, three days after Hiroshima. Hiroshi Nishioka, now 93, was 13 years old at the time of the attack. Representing the hibakusha, the irradiated survivors, he conveyed, “Nuclear weapons should never be used. If they are used, it’s over,” he told reporters. The registry of victims now includes 201,942 names, 3,167 of which were added since last year.
