NASA’s Perseverance rover recently identified a remarkable iron- and nickel-rich rock on Mars that scientists suspect could be a meteorite, possibly originating from another part of the solar system. Known as ‘Phippsaksla,’ the rock was spotted during a survey of the bedrock in Mars’ ‘Vernodden’ region. Measuring approximately 80 centimeters across, its sculpted appearance stood out against the surrounding terrain. Utilizing its SuperCam instrument, the rover verified the rock’s unusual composition, high in iron and nickel, characteristics typical of iron-nickel meteorites formed in large asteroids’ cores. This suggests that the rock could have traveled from beyond Mars and landed on the planet’s surface. However, further analysis is required to confirm its meteorite status. If verified, it would be added to the roster of meteorites examined by previous Mars rovers.
