According to the official Directorate of Primary Education Teachers (Dikdas), National Teacher’s Day is observed on November 25th in Indonesia. In 2025, this date falls on the last Tuesday of November. Despite being a national day, National Teacher’s Day is not designated as a public holiday, as per Presidential Decree No. 78 of 1994.
The history of National Teacher’s Day traces back to the establishment of the Dutch East Indies Teachers Association (PGHB) in 1912, later renamed the Indonesian Teachers Association (PGI) in 1932. The name change symbolized the teachers’ spirit in supporting Indonesia’s independence. Despite restrictions under the Japanese occupation, the PGI continued to affirm its commitment to the country. Following Indonesia’s independence, the first Indonesian Teachers Congress was held in Surakarta, Central Java, on November 24-25, 1945, leading to the birth of the Indonesian Teachers Association (PGRI). The founding date of PGRI was then adopted as the reference for designating November 25th as National Teacher’s Day.
To strengthen the recognition of teachers’ roles, this date was officially declared as National Teacher’s Day through Presidential Decree No. 78 of 1994. Each Teacher’s Day celebration brings forth an official theme that reflects the focus, values, and main messages emphasized on that occasion.
In 2025, both the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) and the Ministry of Religion (Kemenag) released different official themes for National Teacher’s Day, each underscoring the vital role teachers play for the nation. 2025’s Teacher’s Day theme ‘Great Teacher, Strong Indonesia’ from Kemendikbud emphasizes the importance of exemplary practices, good practices, and an open and sustainable educational ecosystem for all. The theme of ‘Caring for the Universe with Love’ by the Ministry of Religion reflects a philosophy of education that emphasizes spiritual awareness, ecological concern, and human values. It urges teachers to educate with compassion, nurturing their students’ empathy for other humans and the surrounding environment. Education is considered a broader process of shaping individuals who are faithful, knowledgeable, and morally upright. Teachers are seen as catalysts for change, instilling values of love and responsibility towards the universe.
