Nepal Chooses 2-Year-Old Girl as New Living Goddess Adored by Hindus and Buddhists

Aryatara Shakya was carried by her parents from her home in a Kathmandu alley to the temple palace in her honor, after being announced during the Hindu festival, Indra Jatra. At just 2 years and 8 months old, Aryatara will replace Trishna Shakya, who just turned 11 and is now considered a mere mortal. Devotees lined up to pay their respects, touching the girls’ feet with their foreheads, offering flowers, and money. The new Kumari, Aryatara, will bless the devotees, including the country’s president, later this week.
