The turmoil began on Monday with demonstrations initially called ‘Z Generation Protests,’ opposing rampant corruption, nepotism, and social media restrictions. However, the situation escalated rapidly after security forces used force.
Most of the casualties were young protesters shot by the police, with many still hospitalized in critical condition.
By Tuesday, protests had spread nationwide. Government buildings, political party offices, and the Kathmandu Parliament were set on fire. Some political leaders’ residences were attacked, police stations were overrun, and the international airport was forced to close.
Reports indicated that the Prime Minister had evacuated the official residence by helicopter before his resignation announcement. Several federal and provincial ministers and lawmakers also resigned due to the government’s handling of the protests, exacerbating the political crisis.
UN Human Rights said it is deeply concerned about the escalating violence in Nepal and called for immediate measures to de-escalate the situation, emphasizing the need for accountability and justice for the victims.
