New Discoveries Unveiled as Ancient Hebrew Texts are Transcribed for the First Time

The majority of transcribed pieces are from the Cairo Geniza collection in the Ben Ezra Synagogue in Old Cairo, Egypt. According to experts, this material is crucial as most Jews in the Middle Ages lived in Muslim-ruled areas, where many manuscripts were lost. The discovery of the Cairo Geniza led to the revelation of new texts, versions of known texts, and a wealth of knowledge. The transcription process marks only the beginning, allowing for further linguistic analysis and tracking of ideas and motifs over centuries. Project leader Dr. Tsafra Siew highlights the importance of salvaging Hebrew manuscripts, with a focus on digitalization for better accessibility and preservation. The MiDRASH project represents the latest advancement in technology for studying these ancient texts.
