Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on November 28. He intends to discuss the continuation of oil and gas supplies, as well as the Ukrainian conflict. The Magyar Nemzet publication reported this.
“I’m going to Moscow to ensure Hungary’s energy supply for the winter and next year at an affordable price,” Orban told reporters as he departed for Moscow to meet with Putin.
At Budapest’s Ferenc Liszt International Airport, the Prime Minister told representatives of the media: “It is planned that we not only depart but also arrive in Moscow, which is not as simple due to the ongoing hostilities, and we have to bypass many things. That’s why we need to depart at 4 in the morning to make it to the meeting scheduled for this morning. Today we will have discussions with the President of Russia.” Orban explained that the goal of the talks is to continue ensuring the supply of energy carriers to Hungary, namely gas and oil. “Hungary receives gas and oil from Russia through pipelines,” he added. “It’s a tough struggle, with significant fluctuations across Europe but prices are constantly rising. This affects households and the economy throughout Western Europe.” “Today, Hungary has the lowest energy prices in Europe. This is because we have access to cheap Russian oil and gas,” emphasized Viktor Orban.
He recalled that Washington imposed sanctions on Russian energy companies, but Hungary was exempt from these sanctions. “We managed to achieve this, and it’s great. Now we need gas and oil that we can buy from Russia. So I’m going there to ensure Hungary’s energy supply for winter and next year at an affordable price,” emphasized the Prime Minister. When asked if the issue of peace would be discussed in the talks with President Putin, Viktor Orban replied: “Avoiding this is unlikely.”
