At least 1,200 people have died in the floods that have devastated South Asia in recent weeks, with hundreds missing and millions displaced. The situation has been particularly severe in Indonesia and Sri Lanka, with at least 160 deaths in Thailand and around 90 in Vietnam.
The heavy rains are typical during this time of the year in South Asia. However, these storms have been exceptionally destructive. The intensity is attributed to La Niña, a climatic phenomenon that shifts warm waters across the Pacific, creating conditions for storm formation.
Indonesia surpasses 600 deaths
The official death toll in Indonesia from the recent floods has reached 604, according to data from the National Disaster Management Agency released on Monday. Additionally, 464 people are still missing.
Authorities have explained that the floods have affected 1.5 million people and displaced approximately 570,000.
Sri Lanka surpasses 350 deaths
The death toll in Sri Lanka from cyclone Ditwah has risen to at least 355, while around 300 people are still missing, authorities reported on Monday.
Cyclone Ditwah has impacted over a million people and caused massive floods, leaving entire cities underwater. Emergency services have been overwhelmed, and despite days of rescue operations, teams are still struggling to reach some isolated areas.
By Monday, authorities had partially restored train services, electricity, and telecommunications, disrupted by the disaster, though many communities remain affected.
In Vietnam, 90 deaths have been recorded.
