At least 1,608 people have lost their lives due to the ongoing floods, which are threatened by forecasts of rain on Friday in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. Thailand has reported a total of 276 deaths, with approximately four million people affected by the severe weather. Indonesia, the hardest-hit country, has seen the death toll rise to 846, with 547 missing and millions affected. Emergency teams are working tirelessly to provide food and medical assistance in the affected provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
In Sri Lanka, the death toll has reached 486, with 341 people still missing. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has issued an international appeal for $6.2 million to assist the 1.8 million affected population. More than 1.1 million people have been displaced to shelters in these three countries, with total losses exceeding $12 billion.
The severe weather also caused new floods in Vietnam’s Lam Dong province on Thursday night, damaging around 2,000 homes. Experts attribute the intensity of this year’s tropical storms and typhoons to ocean warming, while the devastating impact is linked to deforestation and poor urban planning, among other factors.
