Palmeiras Sees Flamengo’s Provocation Regarding Synthetic Grass in Note on Financial Fair Play; Check out the Behind-the-Scenes

The behind-the-scenes war between Palmeiras and Flamengo escalated with the note on Financial Fair Play. The latest chapter unfolded on Monday (10th) regarding the CBF’s Financial Fair Play. The Rio de Janeiro club issued an official statement outlining its stance on the matter for the Brazilian football governing body. The last point addressed in the statement is the use of synthetic turf, a surface utilized by Palmeiras at the Allianz Parque.

“Plastic pitches must be immediately eliminated from all professional national tournaments. The discrepancy in maintenance costs between natural and artificial pitches creates financial imbalances among clubs and jeopardizes the physical health of players and athletes,” wrote Flamengo. ESPN learned that Palmeiras views the approach to this topic as not aligning with a proposal for Financial Fair Play, but rather an attempt to weaken a direct rival in the fight for major titles in Brazilian and South American football. The report also revealed that Palmeiras is unlikely to issue an official statement on the matter but closely monitors the discussion within the CBF. Leila Pereira, the president of the Sao Paulo-based club, is a proponent of implementing Financial Fair Play and maintains a good relationship with Samir Xaud, the entity’s president.

Relations between Palmeiras and Flamengo are significantly strained behind the scenes, particularly due to the ongoing legal disputes involving the two clubs and Libra, the bloc responsible for broadcasting rights sales. ESPN reported that Leila Pereira and Luiz Eduardo Baptista, known as Bap, avoided any sort of interaction or minimal contact during the meetings of the semifinalists’ club presidents in the CONMEBOL Libertadores in mid-October. The outlook suggests that tensions between the two leaderships will remain high, as both presidents are influential figures within the CBF, leading major discussions and vying neck-and-neck for the Brazilian Championship title on the field, with both teams set to face off in the Libertadores final.
