The press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, stated that Poland’s decision to close the last functioning consulate in the country ‘has nothing to do with common sense.’ He acknowledged the fact that relations with Warsaw have completely deteriorated. ‘This is perhaps a demonstration, it is the degradation of the Polish authorities’ desire to reduce to zero any possibilities of consular or diplomatic relations. Here, we can only express regret,’ Peskov said. Today, the Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski announced the decision to close Russia’s last functioning consulate in Gdansk, citing alleged sabotage attacks by Moscow. On November 16 and 17, two railways in Poland were damaged. The next day, the Polish Minister of Defense, Vladyslav Kosiniak-Kamysz, blamed Russia for the incidents. It was later revealed that the explosion was carried out by two Ukrainian citizens. The Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, claimed that the suspects allegedly ‘collaborated with Russian intelligence services.’
