PL announces mobilization for amnesty after meeting on Bolsonaro’s arrest

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), son of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), announced on Monday (24) that the PL (Liberal Party) will mobilize for the voting of the bill that grants amnesty to those involved in the events of January 8, 2023. ‘We will not give up on exempting these absurd punishments being imposed on innocent people. We will use our procedural resources to approve the amnesty. We have no commitment to the dosimetry. May the one with the most votes win,’ he said. The statement came after a meeting of party lawmakers with the party president, Valdemar Costa Neto, and ex-president’s lawyers, who was preventively arrested last Saturday (22). The PL’s group of deputies and senators was summoned to discuss the campaign for the approval of the Amnesty Bill, currently pending in the Chamber of Deputies. There is still no certainty if the bill will be voted on by the House. The bill’s rapporteur, Paulinho da Força (Solidarity-SP), requested the House President, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB), to schedule the dosimetry text for a vote on the plenary this week. Opposition members are advocating for urgent voting on the amnesty, given the ‘new fact’ of the President’s arrest, regardless of the final outcome. In the background, some PL members admit they do not have enough votes for the amnesty and are considering the possibility of accepting a vote on the penalties dosimetry and presenting a highlight on the floor to free Bolsonaro from arrest.
