The case of player Bruno Silva, who underwent treatment for cancer resulting in partial penis amputation, draws attention to the high number of penis amputations in Brazil. Over the past ten years, more than 22.2 thousand hospitalizations, 4,500 deaths, and around 580 annual amputations have been recorded, according to data from the Brazilian Society of Urology (SBU), obtained from the Ministry of Health and disclosed in February 2025. According to Dr. Roni Fernandes, director of the Higher School of Urology at SBU, ‘the main cause of partial penis amputation is the treatment of certain types of cancer,’ which is still considered rare. When the tumor affects the external part of the organ (glans) and invades deeper layers, surgery to remove part of the penis becomes necessary, especially when less invasive therapies such as localized tumor removal or laser were not sufficient to eliminate all cancer cells.
