The number of dead was updated over the weekend, after inspections of three more towers out of the eight that make up the Wang Fuk Court residential complex in the Tai Po district. Some bodies were found on rooftops and stairwells, where residents tried to escape. Hong Kong’s anti-corruption body reported that ‘consultants, scaffold subcontractors, and a project intermediary’ were among the eight people already detained on Friday when the rescue operations were completed. On Thursday, three men had already been detained for suspected involvement in leaving foam packaging at the fire site. Police reported that more than 40 people are still considered missing and Shuk-yin said they do not ‘rule out the possibility of more deaths’ as the police continue to search the site. To honor the victims, over a thousand people gathered along the banks of a nearby canal to leave white flowers and messages. Hong Kong entered a three-day period of mourning starting on Saturday.
