The biggest solar eclipse of the 21st century will be visible on August 2, 2027. Confirmed by NASA, the phenomenon will occur on a Monday and will bring over six minutes of complete darkness in some regions of the planet. It can be widely observed in the eastern hemisphere, but totality will only be visible within a specific shadow path.
The path will cross ten countries, starting in Spain and extending through Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia, according to Eclipse Wise. In other parts of Europe, Africa, and southern Asia, the eclipse may only be partially seen, without the full effect of sunlight blocking.
According to the Space portal, the extraordinary duration of totality makes the event known as the ‘eclipse of the century.’ The Moon will cover the Sun for up to 6 minutes and 22 seconds, surpassing recent eclipses like the one in April 2024, which lasted a maximum of 4 minutes and 28 seconds. The width of the shadow path will also be wider than usual, as the Moon will be at its closest point to Earth, the perigee.
This spectacle, resulting from the alignment of the Sun, Moon, and Earth, is expected to provide both scientists and the public with a unique and rare experience in this century. At the peak of the phenomenon, the totality region will be around 258 kilometers wide and will extend along a 15,227-kilometer path, covering approximately 2.5 million square kilometers of the Earth’s surface.
