President of TSE, Cármen reprimands lawyer for comments on auditable vote

President of TSE, Cármen reprimands lawyer for comments on auditable vote. Supreme Court Minister Cármen Lúcia intervened after the oral argument of Alexandre Ramagem’s lawyer, Paulo Renato Cintra, during the trial of what would be a coup plan against the 2022 election outcome. The magistrate, who is also president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), addressed the lawyer and pointed out that there is a distinction between ‘auditable electoral process’ and ‘printed vote.’ ‘You repeated it as if they were synonyms, and they are not. The electoral process is widely auditable in Brazil and we undergo an audit – so that the idea that it is not auditable does not remain for those watching,’ the minister said. ‘What was said all the time was a confusion to create confusion in the minds of Brazilians to call into question the legitimacy of the electoral process,’ she added. Seeking to clarify his statements, the lawyer said he used the expressions ‘auditable vote’ and ‘printed vote’ because they were terms ‘repeated’ by former President Jair Bolsonaro. ‘And illegitimate,’ retorted Cármen Lúcia. The minister is part of the First Chamber of the STF, which judges deputy Ramagem (PL-RJ), Bolsonaro, and other defendants. ‘I professionally know the security of the urns, and this issue of printed votes was only in relation to the defense and what was said. It is not the defense that defends this idea,’ added the lawyer, signaling an ‘I agree’ to the minister’s interventions. Earlier, in his argument, Paulo Renato had said that his client’s statements in defense of the printed vote were, ‘right or wrong,’ a ‘topic’ of his. Also, according to the defense, after the Chamber of Deputies rejected the implementation of printed votes for the urns, Ramagem no longer made references to the ‘auditable vote.’ Who are the defendants of group 1? In addition to former President Jair Bolsonaro, the crucial core of the coup plan includes seven other defendants: Alexandre Ramagem, federal deputy and former president of Abin (Brazilian Intelligence Agency); Almir Garnier, admiral who commanded the Navy in Bolsonaro’s government; Anderson Torres, former Minister of Justice under Bolsonaro; Augusto Heleno, former GSI (Institutional Security Office) minister under Bolsonaro; Mauro Cid, former aide-de-camp to Bolsonaro; Paulo Sérgio Nogueira, general and former Defense Minister under Bolsonaro; and Walter Souza Braga Netto, former Defense and Chief of Staff Minister under Bolsonaro, candidate for vice president in 2022. What crimes are the defendants being accused of? Bolsonaro and the other defendants are being tried in the Supreme Court for five crimes. They are: Armed criminal organization; Attempt to violently abolish the Democratic Rule of Law; Coup d’état; Damage qualified by violence and grave threat; Deterioration of a listed property. The exception is Ramagem. In early May, the Chamber of Deputies approved a request to suspend the criminal case against the parliamentarian. Therefore, he is only being charged with crimes of armed criminal organization, attempt to violently abolish the Democratic Rule of Law, and coup d’état. Trial schedule The First Chamber’s president, Minister Cristiano Zanin, has scheduled five dates for the trial of the crucial core of the coup plan.
