Through Gus Dur’s figure, the Islamic clerics and Islamic schools which were once on the periphery culturally and politically entered the realm of the state and the palace, as stated in the book ‘The Political Journey of Gus Dur’. Today, Gus Dur is not only known as a scholar and former president, but also as a national hero. This is documented in Presidential Decree No. 116/TK/2025 regarding the bestowal of the title of National Hero.
