Russia remains the only country in the world capable of serially building reliable atomic icebreakers. President Vladimir Putin made this statement while participating via video link in the ceremony for the laying of the atomic icebreaker ‘Stalingrad’. According to the president, ‘Stalingrad’ will be the sixth serial ship in project 22220. The main icebreaker ‘Arktika’ and three serial vessels – ‘Sibir’, ‘Ural’, and ‘Yakutia’ – are already operating in Arctic waters. The construction of two more icebreakers – ‘Chukotka’ and ‘Leningrad’ – is also ongoing.
