Residents of Belo Horizonte and metropolitan region feel earth tremors

Residents of Belo Horizonte (MG) and cities in the metropolitan region reported feeling earth tremors between Tuesday night (9/16) and early Wednesday morning (9/17). The cases occurred in the Pampulha region, as well as in Betim, Contagem, Esmeraldas, and Ribeirão das Neves.

Minas Gerais records the sixth earthquake during the month of August. According to the Brazil Earthquakes organization, which monitors the phenomenon, tremors were also reported in Juatuba, Ibirité, Pedro Leopoldo, Capim Branco, Matozinhos, São Joaquim de Bicas, Mário Campos, among others. The magnitude was estimated between 2.8 and 3.2 on the Richter scale.

“I thought it was thunder, it shook a lot!” reported a resident of the Franciscadriangela neighborhood in Ribeirão das Neves on social media. Another resident of the city, from the San Marino neighborhood, said he heard a very loud noise. In the Vienna neighborhood, in the Justinópolis region, a resident reported hearing a very strange noise and that the house window shook a lot.

Due to its rarity, the phenomenon caused surprise. “My husband thought it was a car sound system,” said one woman. “My daughter also thought the neighbor had turned on his car stereo,” another replied.

No official reports were made by the Brazilian Seismographic Network (RSBR). According to the Fire Department, as of 11 pm on Tuesday, no incidents were recorded due to earth tremors.

The Civil Defense of Minas Gerais was contacted for clarification, but has not yet responded. The agency in Belo Horizonte reported that there were no calls in the capital regarding the tremors.

Recent history.Over the past month, the state of Minas Gerais has registered six earthquakes by the stations of the Brazilian Seismographic Network (RSBR), with analysis by the Center for Seismology at the University of São Paulo (USP). The locations where the phenomenon was felt are in the Central Region, Jequitinhonha Valley, and Triângulo. They were:
– 01/08 – Planura (Triângulo Mineiro): Magnitude 2.2 mR
– 15/08 – Araçuaí (Vale do Jequitinhonha): Magnitude 1.9 mR
– 23/08 – Sete Lagoas (Central Region of Minas): Magnitude 1.9 mR
– 24/08 – Sete Lagoas (Central Region of Minas): Magnitude 2.5 mR
– 25/08 – Pirajuba (Triângulo Mineiro): Magnitude 2.8 mR
– 26/08 – Frutal (Triângulo Mineiro): Magnitude 2.3 mR
“Small earth tremors in Minas Gerais are not uncommon; on the contrary, it is the state with the highest number of recorded seismic events. Natural tremors, for the most part, are due to the large geological pressures acting on the Earth’s crust,” explains Bruno Collaço, seismologist at the Center for Seismology of USP and RSBR.

In five days, cities in Minas Gerais feel earth tremors. Intensity with minor damages. The tremor felt in the Greater BH can be classified at one of the lowest intensities on the Richter scale, according to information from Michigan Tech University.
