Russian tennis player pulls off upset against US favorite. The title is within reach!

Russian tennis player Anna Blinkova is confidently reclaiming her lost positions in the world rankings at the WTA 250 tournament in Jiangxi. The athlete knocked out American favorite Alicia Parks from the title race and surprised local fans with her unusual performance.

In a recent period of her career, Blinkova has been struggling, failing to win at least three matches at a single tournament since 2023. While she has had some successes in the Challenger and ITF competitions, it has not been enough to bring her back to the top 35.

Coming into the Jiangxi tournament, Blinkova was ranked 95th, with no expectations of being seeded. She had a smooth victory in the first round against Chloe Paquet from the qualifiers, and then defied the odds by defeating the sixth seed, Hungarian player Bondar, in straight sets.

In the quarterfinals, Blinkova faced off against Alicia Parks, who was seeded third by the organizers. Parks, from the US, boasts one WTA title and is positioned 30 spots above Blinkova in the world rankings.

In the third game, Blinkova made Parks nervous, breaking her serve in a tough battle. While Parks showed signs of frustration, Blinkova stayed composed, using her opponent’s nerves to her advantage. Despite a late surge from Parks, Blinkova sealed the victory in the first set.

The second set followed a similar script, with Blinkova displaying better composure in crucial moments. Parks made errors, sometimes without Blinkova having to do much. The Russian led 5-2 again but secured the victory only in the 12th game.

For the first time in two years, Blinkova secured three consecutive wins at a WTA tournament, propelling her back into the top 80 in the world rankings. She is set to face Czech player Dominika Cibulkova in the semifinals, who is ranked 151st.

However, the Chinese fans will remember this match for Blinkova’s post-match interview. The tennis player is renowned for her love of learning foreign languages and can speak Mandarin well. Fans were thrilled as they cheered her with ovations.
