Scepticism Surrounds Indonesia’s Economic Growth

Car sales falling, cement sales declining, and jobless claims rising have raised doubts about the robust third-quarter economic growth reported by Indonesia’s statistics agency on Nov 5. Statistics Indonesia (BPS) revealed that the economy grew by 5.04% between July and September 2025, fueled by sectors like tourism and business services. Despite the positive numbers, economists and business groups have been warning since August 2025 that the official growth figures could be overstated, leading to misguided policy decisions. Dr. Esther Astuti from Diponegoro University expressed concerns about potential repercussions on foreign investment if trust in government data is lost.
