Seattle’s World Cup ‘Pride Match’ featuring Iran and Egypt, two countries where homosexuality is illegal, is set to take place on June 26. The clash in Group G will happen at Lumen Field on a Friday, coinciding with the city’s pride weekend. The Pride Match was organized prior to the team selection and the 2026 World Cup Draw in Washington D.C. The spokesperson of the Pride Match Advisory Committee emphasized its aim to celebrate and elevate Pride events in Seattle and nationwide. This match illustrates Seattle and Washington State’s commitment to inclusivity, unity, and respect for all individuals, fostering a welcoming environment for players, fans, residents, and visitors alike.
The Seattle local organizing committee, a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, launched a Pride Match design contest last summer. Artists from Washington State were invited to submit their LGBTQ+ concept designs. While the Pride Match design is not an official FIFA asset, it serves as an emblem of Seattle’s dedication to promoting diversity and unity within the global football community. Last month, the Seattle World Cup committee revealed the three finalists chosen for their original Pride Match designs.
Lumen Field will see six World Cup events, including the USMNT’s second group stage match on June 19. The pride celebrations in Seattle will coincide with the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising on June 28. Contrastingly, concerns over LGBTQ+ rights emerged during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar due to the country’s anti-homosexuality laws. In Qatar, homosexual acts can lead to imprisonment for up to three years. FIFA’s handling of LGBTQ+ issues during the 2022 World Cup drew criticism, with reports of security crackdowns on Pride-related symbols and support.
American journalist Grant Wahl’s experience at the 2022 World Cup highlighted discrimination, as he was denied entry to a match in Qatar due to wearing a shirt featuring a soccer ball surrounded by a rainbow. This incident underlined the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in certain host countries. Despite these obstacles, Seattle’s Pride Match stands as a beacon of inclusivity and acceptance, showcasing soccer’s unique ability to bridge cultural divides and foster unity among diverse populations.
