Second supermoon of the year illuminates the sky of Brazil this week; check out the date and time

The best viewing will occur right after sunset, starting at 6:40 pm Brasília time. No special equipment is needed; just gaze at the sky from a location with clear visibility. This will be the second supermoon of the year, with the first one happening on October 7th and the third one scheduled for December 4th. However, the term ‘supermoon’ is controversial and not formally recognized by the scientific community. The expression was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979 and was later adopted by some outlets as a way to bring astronomy closer to the general public and facilitate communication about the phenomenon. According to the National Observatory, in Nolle’s definition, the term ‘super’ applies to a full Moon that is at or up to 90% of its closest approach to Earth, known as perigee. Nevertheless, the reason for choosing this name is considered arbitrary and sparks much debate among experts.
