Ship Sinks in Indonesia’s East Kalimantan, 8 Dead Due to Strong Current and Overloading

Jakarta. In East Kalimantan province of Indonesia, a ship sank in the Mahakam River, leading to the death of 8 individuals. The head of the search and rescue office in the province, Dodie Setiyawan, provided this information, stating that the incident occurred on Monday evening. The ship carrying 28 people, including three crew members, sank in the upper area of the river in West Kutai Regency. Setiyawan reported that 20 people were rescued, while eight others were reported missing. By early Wednesday, rescue workers managed to find the last of the eight victims in the river after swimming. It was immediately followed by a search and rescue operation where 50 personnel were involved using rubber boats.
