SINGAPORE – In response to recent adverse weather in the region, the Singapore Red Cross has committed $250,000 to support five of its Asian counterparts. The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS), Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRC), Thai Red Cross (TRCS), and Vietnam Red Cross Society (VNRC) are set to each receive $50,000. This funding is allocated to assist with immediate relief and recovery efforts as outlined in a statement released on Dec 1.
Severe monsoon rains, tropical storms, and cyclones have led to widespread flooding and landslides across Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka, resulting in loss of life, displacement of communities, destruction of homes, and significant damage to vital infrastructure. The Singapore Red Cross reports that PMI, MRC, TRCS, and VNRC are actively involved in on-the-ground response efforts. Collaborating with local authorities, they are operating relief centers, aiding evacuations, providing essential supplies like food and water, supporting cleanup operations, and conducting search and rescue operations in the most severely affected areas.
The TRCS is working closely with local authorities in Hat Yai to assist affected communities, including Singaporean tourists stranded in flood-impacted regions, according to the Singapore Red Cross. In Sri Lanka, the SLRCS has mobilized emergency operations across its 25 branches, deploying Branch Disaster Response Teams to carry out rescue operations, offer first aid, distribute relief items, and assess immediate needs. Volunteers are tirelessly working to support vulnerable families as the crisis unfolds.
Singapore Red Cross chief and secretary general Benjamin William stated, ‘Communities in Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam are grappling with the devastating consequences of climate-related disasters. Numerous families have lost their homes, livelihoods, and access to basic necessities. Our partner national societies are at the forefront of delivering essential aid, and the Singapore Red Cross remains steadfast in its commitment to stand in solidarity with them.’
