CHENNAI: Health Minister Ma Subramanian announced that over 16,000 monsoon special medical camps have been conducted, benefitting six lakh people since the start of the northeast monsoon (NEM) on October 16. In the last 15 days, 16,248 camps treated a total of 6,78,034 individuals, with 5,829 receiving treatment for fever, 51,107 for cold and cough, and 863 for diarrhoea.
Efforts have been intensified to monitor diseases like dengue, malaria, chikungunya, leptospirosis, typhoid, and flu during the monsoon. Around 24,240 officers were tasked with dengue control measures by the health department. The department has reported 284 malaria cases last year, compared to 218 cases this year. Similarly, chikungunya had 550 cases last year, decreasing to 429 cases this year, showcasing ongoing awareness campaigns’ effectiveness.
In response to a fatal snakebite incident, the health department took action against a nurse and doctor at Mangalur PHC in Cuddalore for negligence. Despite adequate anti-snake venom (ASV) stock and training provided, the nurse failed to administer ASV to a patient who later succumbed. The nurse was suspended, and the doctor faced temporary suspension as well, as disclosed by Minister Subramanian.
