South Korea to Send Plane to Repatriate Detainees in US Immigration Operation

South Korea aims to send a chartered plane to repatriate hundreds of workers detained during a migration operation in the United States by Wednesday, as reported by Korean Air, the national airline, to AFP. Last Thursday, US authorities detained around 475 people, including hundreds of South Korean workers, in a major operation at a Hyundai-LG battery factory under construction in the state of Georgia. Described by the US as the largest operation of its kind at a single site within the context of President Donald Trump’s national campaign against irregular migration.

The impact has been significant, leading to a decrease in the number of immigrants in the US for the first time in decades since Trump’s migration policy enforcement. Dreams shattered: ‘People are disappearing. We are terrified,’ recalls a Brazilian immigrant in the US. Korean Air plans to send a chartered Boeing 747-8i to Atlanta before Wednesday, according to a spokesperson from the airline on Tuesday.

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun traveled to Washington on Monday to continue negotiations on the matter, labeling the detentions as a ‘serious situation’ and ensuring the speedy return of workers ‘in good health.’ Seoul had previously announced that an agreement had been ‘reached’ with the US to release and repatriate the detained workers, with a charter flight taking them back to South Korea once administrative procedures were completed.

In addition to being a strategic security ally in the Pacific region, South Korea is the fourth largest economy in Asia and a significant manufacturer of automobiles and electronics, with multiple factories in the US.
