STF reacts to Tarcísio and already has majority to block amnesty

The Supreme Federal Court (STF), in its current composition, already has a majority to block the amnesty that São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas is arranging with the Centrão to benefit Jair Bolsonaro and spare him from prison. The move by Tarcísio, and the strength with which the issue advanced this week in the Chamber, surprised the justices of the Court, who already claim that the possibility of the amnesty succeeding is null. The argument of the justices is that crimes against the Democratic Rule of Law, for which the former president should be convicted, cannot be forgiven according to the Constitution. The majority understanding at the STF was clearly expressed by various ministers in 2023, in the trial that overturned the pardon given by Bolsonaro to then-federal deputy Daniel Silveira. ‘We already gave the vaccine to the problem there,’ said one justice to the column.
