Storm Alert: 388 towns in Minas Gerais may experience heavy rainfall

Minas Gerais has 388 towns under a potential danger alert, also known as a yellow alert, for storms until 10 a.m. this Wednesday (9/17). The alert, issued by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), informs about the possibility of rainfall between 20 and 30 mm/h or up to 50 mm/day, along with winds between 40 and 60 km/h. Seventy-three of these municipalities are also under an orange alert, meaning a possibility of rainfall between 30 and 60 mm/h or up to 50 mm/day and winds between 60 and 100 km/h. The warning is valid until 11 p.m. this Tuesday (9/16). The amount of rainfall is measured in millimeters (mm). Each millimeter corresponds to one liter of water per square meter (m²). For example, if it rains 50 millimeters, it means that 50 liters of water fell on each square meter. A rate of 1 millimeter of rain per minute equals 1 liter of water per minute on an area of 1 square meter. According to Inmet, the potential danger indicates a low risk of power outages, damage to crops, tree falls, and floods.
