Last week, heavy rains lashed the northern tip of Sumatra, Indonesia for three consecutive days. Aceh Province received 16 inches of rain in just one day, resulting in devastating floods that destroyed four villages. As the cyclone passed through the area, the floodwaters carried numerous logs downstream, turning them into floating projectiles. In North Sumatra Province, residential areas were hit hard by the logs and debris, leading to widespread destruction and casualties. Sarma Hutajulu, a voluntary rescue worker, described the scene as ‘piles of timber everywhere, smashing into people’s homes.’
