Study Anchors Obscure Pharaoh in Time, Opening Research Path into Dating the Exodus

For the first time, two scholars used radiocarbon analysis to determine Pharaoh Nebpehtire Ahmose’s reign in Egypt around the second half of the 16th century BCE. This groundbreaking study has paved the way for investigating the link between the biblical Exodus and a catastrophic volcanic eruption in the Aegean Sea. The study’s lead author, Prof. Hendrik J. Bruins, emphasized the importance of volcanic eruptions as temporal markers due to their short duration of impact. The findings published in PLOS ONE journal hold vast implications for the historical understanding of Egypt, Israel, and the broader region.
