Study shows that most sweeteners are associated with up to 62% faster cognitive decline, according to a new USP study

Artificial sweeteners are often marketed as healthier alternatives to sugar. However, a growing body of scientific evidence points to risks associated with the consumption of these compounds. The latest study, published on Wednesday (3) in the scientific journal Neurology, indicates that some sweeteners are associated with faster cognitive decline. ‘Low or no-calorie sweeteners are often seen as a healthy sugar alternative, but our findings suggest that those who consume a lot of sweetener may be worsening their cognition,’ says study’s senior author, Dr. Claudia Kimie Suemoto, a geriatrics professor at the University of São Paulo Medical School (USP). This is the first time such a comprehensive study has analyzed the impact of sugar substitutes on brain health.
