From the solitude of Tharavady, English letters unfold memories; pictures of lazy Manju Variar linger. Written by a man imprisoned for a scriptural sin, the song ‘How many lifetimes have I been searching for you,’ unfolded indeed – that’s what was needed. In Central Jail, from 8 PM to 11 PM F.M. radio played, creating hope to hear ‘I have been waiting for that song for weeks,’ as he wrote in his jail cell. ‘There’s no one here. It’s true loneliness. I won’t lose hope,’ he expressed.
Why get disappointed? The song’s melody isn’t just an intellectual matter. Even today, when played in the playlist at night, ‘How many lifetimes’ is indeed included. His extreme love for the beloved song intensifies as it softly flows through his ear while recalling his unanticipated fondness for the terrifically affectionate song ‘Summer in Bathlehem’. What happened to the man cherishing the intense love for that love song amidst serving time in jail for five years? Would he get married, perhaps with Manju Variar’s portrait, it’s anybody’s guess. Or will he keep waiting for someone? Unknown, it’s an intense longing just like ‘How many lifetimes.’ Just like the deep yearning felt by the protagonist in K. Gireesh’s words, ‘Looking for you from the evening dusk, oh elixir, oh essence in this forest, yearning for you from this melody of love I stand.’ ‘I’m here waiting for someone to recognize me. I believe it’s only her,’ he penned.
