The Supreme Court of Brazil published on Wednesday (22) the decision of the First Panel that convicted former president Jair Bolsonaro and seven allies for an attempted coup. Now, the deadline is open for defenses to submit appeals questioning the ministers’ ruling. Lawyers will have up to 5 days to file the so-called clarification appeals since the crucial core was convicted by a vote of 4 to 1. The document has nearly 2,000 pages. After the submission of appeals, there is no set deadline for the analysis. The rapporteur, Alexandre de Moraes, may individually assess some requests or submit the case to the collegiate body. He may also request the Attorney General’s Office to comment before bringing the case to trial. Therefore, the imprisonment of Bolsonaro or any of the other defendants will not be immediate. There is an expectation at the Supreme Court that any appeals will be reviewed by the end of the year. The sentence only takes effect when the process is completed and there are no more possibilities of appeal. This occurs after the ministers analyze whether these points will be upheld or not.
