Teaching Portuguese in Indonesian Schools: Which Countries Use this Language?

President Prabowo Subianto announced the teaching of Portuguese in Indonesian schools in front of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. But where is Portuguese actually used? According to Ethnologue, as of 2025, Portuguese, along with Indonesian, is among the top 10 most widely spoken languages in the world. The largest 10 based on the number of speakers are: English with 1.5 billion speakers, Mandarin Chinese with 1.2 billion, Hindi with 609.1 million, Spanish with 558.5 million, Arabic with 334.8 million, French with 311.9 million, Bengali with 284.3 million, Portuguese with 266.6 million, Russian with 253.4 million, and Indonesian with 252.4 million speakers.
