Teen killed in tornado in Paraná sent final message to father talking about Confirmation

The last conversation between Julia Kwapis, 14, and her father was about her Confirmation. She is one of the six victims of the tornado that hit the small town of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu in Paraná on Friday night (7). The girl was at a friend’s house when she was swept away by the strong wind, and her family spent the night searching for her. On Saturday morning (8), they found out she was in a hospital in the neighboring city of Laranjeiras do Sul, but she did not survive due to the severity of her injuries.

Julia was supposed to have her Confirmation, a Catholic sacrament, on Saturday. The day before, at 4:45 pm, she sent an audio message to her father, Roberto Kwapis. In the recording, revealed in a report by RPC, aired by Globonews, she mentioned a request from her godmother regarding the Confirmation that would be celebrated the next day.

“So, the godmother asked if we’re going to… want to have a barbecue tomorrow or something like that. Do something after the Confirmation, she asked,” Julia said in the message sent to her father. The message was sent about an hour before the tornado hit the city of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, with 775 injured treated in the region and six confirmed fatalities.

“Unfortunately, this was the last message I exchanged with her, 14 years old, she was very happy, a very dear daughter,” lamented Roberto Kwapis, Julia’s father.
