The Birth of Ethiopia’s GERD Dam: A Journey from Haile Selassie to Crowdfunding

Abdulhakim Shamsuddin was only 14 and studying in high school in Dire Dawa when he first learned about the opportunity to contribute to the construction of a dam on the Blue Nile. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, or GERD, as it is commonly referred to, symbolizes Ethiopia’s ambitious pursuit of harnessing the Nile’s waters for its development. Over the years, the project faced numerous challenges, including financial setbacks and objections from neighboring countries. Despite these obstacles, Ethiopia remained steadfast in its commitment to bring the dam to fruition. The inauguration of the GERD marks a significant milestone in Ethiopia’s history, showcasing its determination to utilize its natural resources for progress.
