In an interview with Fox News, Leavitt stated on Saturday that Americans would occupy six out of seven seats on TikTok’s board and that the video app’s algorithm would be controlled by the USA. She added that the final agreement would be signed in the coming days. The American members of the board will have credentials in national security and cybersecurity, while the remaining member chosen by Chinese ByteDance will be excluded from the security committee, as per a senior White House official.
At the beginning of this week, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng met in Madrid and finalized a preliminary agreement to separate TikTok’s US operations from ByteDance. President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for TikTok’s sale until December 16, with Congress passing a law requiring ByteDance to divest the app by January. ‘All these details have been agreed upon, we just need the agreement to be signed, which I believe will happen in the next few days,’ said Leavitt. Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping finalized the agreement in a phone call on Friday.
The agreement stipulates that Chinese ByteDance will have less than 20% of operations in the USA. The new investors include Oracle, a major technology company providing cloud services and data security. Oracle will be responsible for TikTok’s security, monitoring the app to ensure its safety, and working with the US government. The official also mentioned that user data in the USA will be stored in the country, inaccessible by China.
The official mentioned that the agreement will allow American users to continue using the popular app safely. ‘Data and privacy will be led by one of the largest US technology companies, Oracle, and the algorithm will also be controlled by Americans,’ said Leavitt.
