The recent floods in Indonesia, Thailand, and Sri Lanka have left a preliminary toll of 1,146 deaths, hundreds missing, and thousands affected on Monday, with the Indonesian island of Sumatra bearing the brunt of the bad weather. Indonesia’s National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) raised the confirmed death toll to 604 in Northern Sumatra, Aceh, and West Sumatra provinces. The injured were estimated at 2,600, with around 570,000 evacuated by 8:00 PM local time. Rescue teams in Indonesia are searching for 464 missing persons. Diah Rahayu, 25, anxiously awaits news of her family amidst the challenges of limited connectivity in North Sumatra. The losses in the affected areas have been estimated at $4 billion by Monday. President Prabowo Subianto visited North Sumatra, where local authorities requested the declaration of a national disaster. Sri Lanka has reported an increase in fatalities, with the death toll rising to 366 and 367 missing. Over 1.1 million people have been affected by the inclement weather in Sri Lanka, with around 200,000 displaced in temporary shelters due to destroyed infrastructure. Health authorities warn of a rise in infectious diseases following the floods. In Thailand, efforts focus on cleanup and reconstruction in regions hit by heavy rains, resulting in 176 deaths. Twelve southern provinces and nearly 4 million people were affected by the floods. Songkhla province, with 138 fatalities, has seen water levels reach three meters. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul oversees recovery efforts in Hat Yai, the south’s commercial hub.
