Trump Administration to Increase Military Focus in Latin America

The United States government, led by President Donald Trump, will now shift its focus more towards Latin America and combating immigration, moving away from its global role, according to the foreign policy strategy published by the United States on Friday (5). The strategy promised a ‘readjustment of our global military presence to address urgent threats in our Hemisphere, moving away from theaters whose relative relevance to American national security has diminished in recent decades or years’. The release of the new foreign policy strategy comes amidst a significant military mobilization in the Caribbean and an unprecedented escalation of tensions against the Venezuelan government of Nicolás Maduro. This suggests that the military presence in the U.S. in the region may be more enduring than previously expected. The combat against Latin American drug cartels, which the White House says it has been engaged in since August, is outlined in the document. Called the National Security Strategy, the document guides the foreign policies to be taken by a government to pursue the supremacy of its interests over those of other countries. Published periodically by several countries around the world, this is the first one of Donald Trump’s second term. According to the strategy, the Trump administration believes that some countries’ influence over Latin America ‘will be difficult to reverse’, however, the U.S. will focus on the aspect that often this relationship is more based on commercial factors than ideological alignment. The document outlines three main elements in the military realignment in the region: a more suitable presence of the Coast Guard and Navy to control maritime routes, contain illegal migration and other unwanted forms of migration, reduce human and drug trafficking, and control essential transit routes in crisis situations; targeted efforts to protect the border and defeat cartels, including, when necessary, the use of lethal force to replace the failed strategy based solely on law enforcement in recent decades; establishing or expanding access in strategically important locations. U.S. security strategy The new national security strategy of the second Trump administration seeks a correction of behavior compared to previous administrations that, according to the document, sought global domination, burdened the country, and allowed allies to outsource their defense costs to the U.S. The document published by the White House accuses Europe of blocking progress on the peace agreement regarding Ukraine, anticipates a ‘major focus’ on Taiwan due to the island’s dominance in semiconductor production.
