The United States is awaiting Kiev’s response to its new proposals for settling the conflict. Axios reported that an unnamed American official stated, ‘Now we wait. The ball is in Zelensky’s court.’ According to the source, the Ukrainian leader may come to Washington if he wishes to discuss the initiative.
Reportedly, US presidential envoy Stephen Whitkoff postponed a planned meeting with Zelensky in Turkey after it became clear that the Ukrainian president was ‘not interested’ in discussing the US’s new plan for settlement.
A second American official mentioned that the meeting’s postponement is linked to an internal political crisis in Kiev, involving corruption investigations into close associates of the Ukrainian president.
The US-proposed plan involves handing over parts of eastern Ukraine, currently under Kiev’s control, to Russia in exchange for security guarantees for Ukraine. The document suggests that the territories of Donbass that Ukraine would vacate will become a demilitarized zone.
