Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced that a meeting will be held in Istanbul on Monday to evaluate the progress made on the Gaza peace plan. Fidan stated that the meeting will focus on what can be achieved together in the next stage. Ministers from several Muslim countries, including Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, have been invited to participate in the meeting.
These foreign ministers previously met with US President Donald Trump on September 23 during the UN General Assembly in New York. Fidan mentioned during a news conference with Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna that there is hope for progress in the peace plan discussions.
Several critical issues will be addressed during the meeting, including the obstacles to implementation, challenges to be faced, next steps, discussions with Western allies, and the support for ongoing talks with the United States. Fidan criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for seeking a pretext to violate the ceasefire in Gaza and restarting the conflict.
Turkey recently sent a disaster response team to Gaza to assist with search and rescue operations. However, the team has not been able to enter the Palestinian territory as they are awaiting Israeli approval at the border. Turkish officials are actively working on the situation and considering the option of joining an international force to monitor the ceasefire.
On the other hand, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar expressed reluctance to allow Turkish armed forces into Gaza due to their perceived hostile approach to Israel. Saar stated that Israel would not agree to Turkish involvement in Gaza and conveyed this message to US officials.
