The foreign ministers of Turkey and Egypt are set to meet in Ankara to address the Gaza ceasefire and international efforts towards reconstructing the enclave after the conflict ends. Turkey has been a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in Gaza, labeling it as genocide, a claim denied by Israel. Alongside Egypt and Qatar, Turkey has played a key role in mediating the delicate ceasefire and has committed to ensuring its strict implementation.
The Turkish foreign ministry source revealed that the meeting between Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty will focus on the future steps following the U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement. Despite Israel’s alleged violations, Fidan is expected to commend the Palestinian side for upholding the ceasefire terms and managing the situation positively. Additionally, Fidan will advocate for international support in rebuilding Gaza, reiterating Turkey’s willingness to contribute to the reconstruction efforts.
Israel and Hamas have exchanged accusations of breaching the October truce, with disputes over the return of hostage remains and aid deliveries. In line with U.S. recommendations, Turkey has expressed interest in joining monitoring groups to oversee ceasefire compliance, including an international stabilisation force under consideration for a U.N. Security Council resolution. Nonetheless, Israel has opposed Turkish involvement in Gaza, asserting no Turkish forces will be present in the region.
The ministers are also scheduled to inaugurate the Turkey-Egypt Joint Planning Group, focusing on logistical preparations for upcoming high-level talks in Cairo next year. Ankara has commended Egypt for its role in facilitating humanitarian aid to Gaza, having dispatched significant aid shipments and offered assistance to Hamas in locating Israeli captives. Turkey has been actively engaged in discussions concerning Gaza, evidenced by a recent ministerial meeting in Istanbul attended by Muslim nations (excluding Egypt).
During his visit to Washington, Fidan engaged in discussions with U.S. officials on Syria and Gaza, exploring potential next steps within the ceasefire agreement. The meeting in Ankara signifies a crucial step in ongoing diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region and support post-war reconstruction.
