The United Arab Emirates announced on Saturday a $1 billion investment to expand AI infrastructure and AI-enabled services throughout Africa. The initiative aims to assist countries in achieving their national development goals. Minister of State Saeed Bin Mubarak Al Hajeri unveiled the ‘AI for development initiative’ during the G20 leaders’ summit in Johannesburg. He emphasized the importance of AI in education, healthcare, and climate adaptation, stating that the UAE views AI as a crucial component of humanity’s future. The country is committed to fostering responsible and inclusive AI for global advancement.
The UAE has established itself as a significant investor in Africa, with a bilateral trade volume of around $107 billion in 2024, marking a 28% increase from the previous year. Between 2020 and 2024, the UAE’s total investments in Africa exceeded $118 billion. Abu Dhabi is making substantial investments in AI, including the construction of one of the world’s largest data-centre hubs using US technology. Although not a member of the G20, the UAE was invited to the summit by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is hosting the event in Africa for the first time. The UAE’s commitment to innovation underscores its dedication to driving economic growth and productivity globally.
