Ukraine: Large-scale Russian Airstrikes Jeopardize Diplomatic Progress

Assistant Secretary-General Yenchay spoke at the emergency meeting the day after the new round of airstrikes in Ukraine, which resulted in at least 23 deaths in Kyiv. He stated, ‘The intense summer battles leading to increasing casualties and escalating destruction go against the significant diplomatic efforts made in recent months.’ Civilians suffered severe casualties, with Ukrainian officials reporting that Russian forces launched 598 drones and 31 missiles overnight from August 27th to 28th. Among the casualties in Kyiv were 4 children between 2 and 17 years old, with 64 people injured. Thirty-three buildings across 10 administrative districts in the city were damaged.
