The UN and its partners in Afghanistan are coordinating with local authorities to swiftly assess needs, provide emergency assistance, and stand ready to mobilize additional support. Twenty rapid assessment teams have been deployed on the ground. UN Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan and Humanitarian Coordinator, Indrika Ratwatte, briefed journalists from the UN Geneva office via video from Kabul, stating that the earthquake’s epicenter was in Nangarhar Province, but four other provinces were also affected. The earthquake has already claimed over 800 lives, left more than 2,000 injured, and the death toll is expected to rise.
