The sanctions against Iran by the UN were reinstated on Saturday night (27) after the mechanism activated by the UK, France, and Germany expired at the end of August. These countries reprimanded Tehran for failing to meet its commitments regarding its nuclear program. With the authorization of the UN Security Council and the failure on Friday (26) by Russia and China to extend the deadline, the severe sanctions, ranging from an arms embargo to economic measures, automatically came back into effect on Saturday at 8 pm New York time, ten years after their lifting. The UN vote on Friday saw China and Russia’s proposal for the resolution governing the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal to be extended for six more months, until April 18, 2026. Only four of the 15 council members supported the resolution presented by the two countries, while nine voted against it and two abstained. France, Germany, and the UK accuse Tehran of violating a 2015 agreement aimed at preventing it from building a nuclear bomb, a claim that Iran denies.
